Primary Assessment of Your Child’s Vision
Step 1: Before any vision therapy treatment is recommended; a comprehensive vision examination should be completed. This allows for our doctors to determine how your eyesight can best be helped; with glasses, contact lenses, vision therapy, or a combination of the two. This is also a vital step to ensure the visual system is healthy.
Binocular Vision Evaluation
Step 2: Dr. Sis will complete a binocular vision evaluation to evaluate how your child’s eyes work together as a team, the speed and accuracy of the focusing system of the eyes, and how the two eyes coordinate and move. If needed, she will also evaluate how well visual information is processed by your child. The testing procedure takes approximately 45 minutes – 1 hour.
Step 3: Dr. Sis will need to get input from all parents/guardians in order to ensure that all necessary information is taken into account in designing your child’s treatment plan. It is strongly recommended that both parents are present for this consultation. Dr. Sis will review a great deal of information and may ask questions of a sensitive nature. Our experience has been that children are self-conscious about these discussions and it is best if they are not in the room at that time. The consultation takes approximately an hour and a half.
Step 4: Our scheduling staff will assist you with finding a day and time that will work for you and your family’s busy schedule. Vision therapy patients are seen on a weekly basis with one of our trained vision therapists (link to Sandy/Janet). Home therapy activities are assigned weekly to ensure efficient completion of the patient’s vision therapy program. Length of program varies greatly depending on initial diagnosis, severity of the condition, and amount of time dedicated to completing the home activities. Estimate treatment length will be discussed at your consultation.
